New England Shotokan Karate-Do & Tai Chi Center
About our Programs:
Karate-Do
Shotokan Karate-Do is a traditional art form of the Japanese culture and an international martial art. Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation (SKIF) is the world federation for traditional karate-do with affiliated programs in more than 96 countries. SKIF is committed to the proper teaching of Shotokan Karate-Do and we are exclusively teaching Kanazawa Shihan's syllabus in the New England area.
Tai Chi Chuan
Tai chi chuan is a slow moving exercise for individuals who wish to practice a less strenuous program. Tai chi is an ancient Chinese martial art form that emphasizes deep-breathing exercises, chi development (energy enhancement), and the traditional form. Tai chi develops all areas of the body without the stress often found in the faster moving eastern arts. We are teaching Master Poi Chan's tai chi syllabus that includes the 3 part Yang form, quigong (breathing practices), push hands, application, Yang Sword form, Chen Sword form and the Broad Sword form.
About the instructors:
James Shea is a licensed SKIF instructor and examiner. Additionally, he is a student of Grand Master Poi Chan and holds an instructor's license in tai chi chuan.
Thomas Pius is a licensed SKIF instructor and examiner. He also teaches Kobudo to advanced karate-do students.
Mick Wilkinson is an Assistant SKIF Instructor and Club Secretary.
Our Philosophy
We strive to embrace the true meaning of karate-do and tai chi chuan; that is not only to develop our body, mind and spirit but also to improve our character - to become a better person. We try not to lose sight of the fact that karate and tai chi are for life and a means of personal development on physical and mental levels to ultimately seek “harmony with nature.”
